Roundtable Conference: Waterjet Technology
Dimensional Stone - September, 1996
which was facilitated by john hall, arch. Rep. It includes a Disney medallion, in Dal-tile porcelain, quarry tile co. Glazed ceramic tile, and bronze, Mickey floor silhouettes, and various entiles in patterns and cartoon silhouettes. The reason that this project is unique to Precision H20 is that it applies our refiring technology as well as our laminated metals methodologies. What's unique about the project is that cartoon images lend themselves to the high color palette available in quarry tile, ceramic tile, and the refiring waterjet-cut tile that gives the characters a three-dimensional look. We should also be fabricating some stone materials.
Smiga: I think some of the comments that tom was making earlier are very positive for the trade. One was a project for Wetland galleries. Wetland is a world-renowned artist based in California and Hawaii, with about 30 galleries that sell and represent his numerous paintings and sculptures relating to dolphin and whale art themes. They are developing about eight stores in Florida and we've replicated their logo for an entryway medallion, which is a great way to add value to any commercial client.
The waterjet allows that to be done with tremendous exactness, and that's part of the fun. It's certainly a "wow" effect for the client, and that leads to many things. Now wetland is adding a nine-foot medallion around an aquarium in the center of one of the new stores, which is a prime example of the point being made of how one piece of business inspires the next component.
Pretty soon you're adding a medallion that goes into the center of this border. We do quite a few things where it's one-two-three. The first piece comes and then all of a sudden they want something else and then something else.
Gannon: I think one of the intriguing aspects of the abrasive waterjet cutting business is actually those distribution channels. They're all over the map, all the way from services to owners, artists, dealers and distributors. The myriad of ways in which abrasive waterjet business is carried out is probably a little bit of a mystery to most customers. I think the industry is so young that its distribution channels are yet to be solidified. Before I talk about projects, I’d like to make this statement to my colleagues on this panel. I'm honored to be a part of this group, to speak with, and be considered at the level of professionalism shown by this panel.
Especially creative edge, a pioneer in the industry. Creative edge has also been involved in the feasibility for the project I’m going to mention.
As the industry grows, the waterjet projects become more common and larger in scope. We are just starting to encounter competition with each other for projects. Many times it is the reputation and/or fabrication techniques and material specialties that will determine the choice of the waterjetting service to use.
