Waterjet Cutting SystemProgressive Architecture - July, 1991 |
||||
|
A computer-controlled abrasive waterjet cutting system "combines water under extremely high pressure with a fine grit, usually crushed garnet." Steam created by this combination is used as a cutting tool to slice through materials (glass, metal, plastic, stone, and other man-made materials) up to five inches thick. Patterns can be cut, holes drilled, and strip-cutting achieved. The system was used to cut names into the black granite panels of the Astronauts Memorial by Holt Hinshaw Pfau Jones.
