Johnson Shut-Ins Part 1: Metal Sculptures

"A Landscape of Voices" detail, under construction

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park in southern Missouri is a region of incredible natural beauty. Located within a couple hours’ drive of St. Louis, the Shut-ins area is a much loved vacation spot for residents of Eastern Missouri. The park provides a confluence of geology and water with cliffs, falls, white water of all types, wildlife and mountainous terrain.

Creative Edge Master Shop interpreted striking designs from the St. Louis firm Signature Designs into vertical metal icons mounted on limestone monoliths.

Some of the thousands of pieces of metal that make up these multi-layered artistic creations.

Making these metal sculptures involved some really unusual fabrication methods. There are thousands of pieces of metal in six patina finishes. The result is a series of seven-layered bronze and corten steel panels. Each has up to two inches of depth and sculpted relief. Here’s a gallery of the program in design, in process at our shop, and installed at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park.

Creative Edge also created stone icons for this park: see Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park Part 2: Stone Icons

This is exciting, I used to visit the Shut-Ins as a child with my family, but have not been for a long time. Now my wife and I are taking our two girls there today, and I look forward to seeing these wonderful works of art.
